There are many new items on Volume XI which has almost 8,000 files in twenty-four categories equaling 635 megabytes of compressed Macintosh software.
This CD-ROM is the most current collection available with items added as late as March, 1993. Volume XI has compatability for seven (7) BBS systems. First Class, Hermes, Mansion, MUBBS, Nova Link, Second Sight, and Telefinder. All of these BBS systems are excellent and we are trying to support as many sysops as possible. This CD-ROM also makes a GREAT personal library! See the appropriate chapter of this document for personal or BBS use.
Twenty-four software topics
Volume XI contains over 24 topics of Macintosh software including Art, Bus, DA, Education, Fonts, Games, HyperCard, Technotes, MIDI, Newton, Programming, Publishing, QT, System7 tools, Telecommunications and utilities. We have tested all of the files on this version of BBS in a BOX for Quadra 840AV & 32 bit compatability. We then added a picture preview mode that allows users to see a 128*128 pixel preview of all art, quicktime and fonts before they download them or decompress them. Telefinder 3.2.5 systems currently support this function and First Class version 2.5.
Great Collection
Volume XI contains the BEST collection of software ever tested for 32 bit compatability. But that was not enough! We added new files, updated descriptions, and saved disk space by converting all files to Stuffit Deluxe. It's HOT!
Drag and Drop Description/PICT Reader!
Our off line description reader "Show Info"has been updated to allow System 7 users to drag and drop files in the files folder on to this tool to display descriptions of any of the files in the files folder. In addition, files in the Art, Fonts and QuickTime folders will also display a 128*128 pict of the contents. This is a nice feature for finding information on a single file without having to decompress it or look through a directory. All compressed files are in Stuffit Deluxe format for consistency and ease of use.
Another tool on the disk is Stuffit Expander. You can drag and drop files on to it under System 7 for easy decompression. Placing this file on the desktop along with show info gives you the ability to quickly get info on a file and decompress it if needed using AppleEvents through Show Info 2.0.
BBS File Descriptions
BBS in a BOX supports On Location searches. In addition, text file listings and other database tools are provided in various formats. “BBS IN A BOX” is the ONLY CD-ROM that provides BBS descriptions on over 630 megs of compressed Macintosh BBS software. Using Show Info you can easily display the descriptions stored in each file as a resource. FileMaker Pro and text databases of all the files are available as well.
The Future - Volume XII
As a result of your support of the BBS in a BOX series we have been able to bring Ashley Barnard on to the project. Ashley will help us find new ways to provide even more files and testing each new file for quality. New releases of BBS in a BOX will be even better and a two CD set available with Volume XII. We will move all of the multimedia topics to CD #2 and that way sysops can trade CD's or use two players.
Special thanks!
Special thanks and credit to all the authors for making Volume XI of “BBS IN A BOX” a success.
Support the Authors!
If you have additional features you would like to see added to “BBS in a BOX”, please feel free to write or call us. We are interested in making the world of public domain and shareware easily understandable to the Macintosh public.
AMUG spends thousands of hours creating the BBS interface on this CD-ROM. Any charge for this CD-ROM is solely to support the creation of the BBS interface. No fee is charged to download any of the shareware and public domain files provided on this CD-ROM.
Only by supporting the shareware authors and sending in the requested shareware fees, will this type of software distribution continue. If you decompress a file and find it useful, please pay the shareware fee. When users are dishonest with the authors, they become soured on the shareware market and may stop updating their programs, publishing new programs, or they sell their products commercially. Thanks again for supporting Shareware and Public Domain authors!
